Visual Effects Editing Guide

Visual Effects Editing Guide

For our animation we had to do stop-motion animation meaning we had to take a single camera shots and then move the objects slightly.

Editing: Editing requires careful analysis and a good mindset which will allow you to edit quicker, so you can make your animations flow. The animation we've done is simple to edit as all we have to do is place the pictures that we've taken and cut them down a little bit so we could make our animation the length it has to be (30 seconds) this is because we had to make our animation the same length as every other animation advert.

an example of stop animation is of the image below:

Sound: Editing sound into an animation as simple as you had to get the sound off of youtube and get the html code which we then placed onto the editing software. We then cut down the sound down to the 30 seconds that we wanted to be put into our animation. After we had cut it down we then overlapped it onto the animation to finish our final piece.

an example of editing sound into an animation is in the image below:

Film Editing Glossary

Film Editing Glossary
Cut: Using cut was helpful as it allowed us to cut out parts of each interview that weren't needed and other pieces that were irrelevant to our final documentary piece. it also allowed the transactions of each interview to flow better.

Continuity editing: Continuity editing is to smooth discontinuity of an editing process.

Cross Cutting: Cross cutting is two accruing scenes happening at the same time but being shown on the same screen.

Dissolve: Dissolve is from one image going into another in a flowing sequence so its not a rough changeover from each scene.

Establishing shot: The Establishing shot is the start of the scene so its the first thing you will see in each section of a film/ animation/ documentary.

Eyeline match: An Eyeline match is when to people are looking at eachother but you canm see in the final shot that their is a line in the middle of the screen showing they're two different shots.

Fade: We used fade in our documentary as it allowed us to do switch overs from each interview we had smoothly and effectively.

Final Cut: Final Cut is a software package which abled us to edit our documentary to the best of our ability. We were able to cut and add to our documentary. it let us add sound to our documentary which made our documentary even better.

Jump Cut: A jump cut for example is when theirs a fight in a film with two main characters and it starts to faded during the fight and the next scene they both wake up the following day.

Matched Cut: two shots that match to make a long continuing sequence

Montage: a sequence of shots appearing after each other other in a rapid succession.

Rough Cut: a rough cut is an early version of something that has already been made before it has been edited. an example of this would be our documentary it started off at 20 minutes and we managed to cut it down to only 5 minutes.

Shot reverse shot cutting: A convocation going on between two people with a camera shot over the shoulder showing the other person thats talking and vice versa

Wipe: A wipe starts with an image from one part of the screen and then smoothly moves over to another part of the screen.

Interviews For Dummies

Interviews For Dummies
Doing an interview for someone that hasn't done an interview before will be quite tricky as they won't know what to expect and won't know what to say if a certain topic is brought up.

To Interview someone for the first time you'll need to put them into categories for example someone my have a bit of knowledge in a certain area compared to someone else who may know something else in a different topic. So interviewing people in their comfort areas is key as you'll be able to get more information out of them.

You will then need to ask them some questions about that topic. But they mustn't be complicated questions as they (the interviewee) may freeze and won't know what to do.

Picking someone to interview may be difficult as those who haven't done an interview may be to nervous to actually do one. By picking a topic such as football, or Dance those who have knowledge of those areas may feel up for the task of being interviewed. You have to make sure they're confident enough to do the interview as they may freak out when they see a few people asking them questions one after the other.

Filmed Interview Evaluation

Filmed Interview Evaluation
I feel that during the interviews that we conducted went really well we answered each others questions in full and didn't try changing the questions that were asked.

Watching the interview back over I did noticed that all the questions that we asked were random and completely different to the next. If we were to do this interview again, we both said that we should stick to one topic and ask questions based on that topic.

WWW:

  • We filmed the interviews in a quite room so we weren't disturbed
  • Answered our questions in full description
  • Confident when speaking to the interviewer and in front of the camera
  • Didn't hesitate between each questions.
EBI:

  • If we stuck to one topic and asked questions about that
  • If we had a third person to help us interview each other which would help because they could help guide us in what questions we ask.
  • If we used a tripod instead of laying the camera on a table to keep a still image
Overall I feel the interview was a success. I would still change some things such as the questions that should've been based on one topic, and getting the tripod. But apart from that the interview went really well. This is because; the tripod with give as a better still image so the image comes out in a better quality.

Asking questions based on one topic makes the interview look a lot better than just asking a bunch of random questions about anything. Because it'll be easier for the interviewee to answering questions based on that one topic instead of forcing them to think and to slow down when speaking.

Questions that can be improved even with their answers:

Charlie's questions towards Harry

Q1: Do you enjoy BTEC media, if so why?

A1: At times it can be challenging, but other times its a real joy so yes i do like media.

Charlie could've improved his answer by carrying on more and elaborating on his answer by talking more about the subject.

Q1: Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

A1: In 5 years see myself working for quite a good business preferably earning quite a lot of money but in general just working.

Charlie could've improved this by saying in specific what he wanted to be doing in 5 years for example going to university or what job in specific he wanted to do.

Interview Pitch Feedback Evaluation

Interview Pitch Feedback Evaluation
Overall our pitch that we made prior to our documentary is very informative and shows exactly what we are going to do and what we were going to film.

WWW:

  • It was very informative in parts in stating what we were planning to do
  • It gave a rough, short , snappy insight into Bromley FC
  • It shows that we made two projects on the basis of the original one, one for the club (longer version) and a shorter version (official one) which can be found on youtube
  •  We included where Bromley FC is geography wise is and how far away from the town centre
  • In the documentary the best parts were the openings were we had background music over the  credits and the goals.
  • The humorous part of Naughty Nigel singing 'Jamie Slabber he scores when he wants'
  • Jerry Dolke gave us a very good insight into the club

EBI:

  • In the pitch we were suspect to poor spelling/grammar at a couple of points
  • We were quite vague in some areas where didn't go into detail when maybe we should of done
  • The risks that could of occurred were too extreme and could of ended in a very bad manor.
  • In the documentary things we could of improved on were some shots especially Jack Holland and Danny Waldren where it was poor lighting and the shots were poor as you couldn't see the top of Jack Hollands head
  • Could of asked more questions and a more variety of questions to the footballers
  • Another improvement could of been to interview more fans

The main issue with our camerawork is that in some of our shots especially with Jack Holland you can not see the top of his head and you can see his crotch. Although he is very tall we should of had the camera placed further back so we could fit all his head in. Another piece of camerawork that didn't go down too well was Danny Waldren's shot where it was very dark in the background and in a dark room you may not be able see his face.

As a team we believe the documentary was success because we didn't believe we could reach the quality that it currently is. Also we are pleased that we have reached over 650 views on it. Every person that contributed did a great job in their role of giving us their insight of the club.

The pitch we feel was good but we did have to make a few adjustments to our original pitch, such as some spelling and grammatical errors. We also feel we could of made the pitch longer than it actually is and put more detail in the points that we wrote about. But for what we have done we both think we have done a good job.

lighting task

Lighting Task
For our lighting our task is to make sure that the lighting is the best it can possibly be. So to make it as good as possible we will use some natural light by keeping the windows open.
We will also be using some lighting from inside of the classroom. The lighting is important to our animation so we'll need to film it in one go so that we can make sure that the light is more consistent. If we were to film it once and then stop and then film again the next day the lighting may not be the same.

We've decided to use this type of lighting as we feel it will give us the best type of lighting we'll need for our animation.

We're using paper cut out for our animation and we need to draw all of our characters and to draw some of them we need to trace them so to do that we're going to use a light box which will help us bring some of the images through. We tried just using normal light giving off from the computer and from the class room but it didn't work to well. so using the light box benefited us more.

Three Point Lighting:

Three point lighting is a method used in visual media and theatre, video, still photography. the light, as the name says; shines directly on a subject. The strength, colour, and angle of the key determines the shots overall lighting design.

For our animation we need to make sure we have the lighting sorted so its bright in all angles, this is because we're filming from a birds-eye-view angle so the camera will be facing down tag all times. To achieve this we will have lights on all sides of our animation as we can't rely on natural light because the clouds could block the suns light.
